Neuromuscular/TMJ

Neuromuscular dentistry is the science of utilizing the relaxed position of the head and neck muscles to situate the jaw in the most advantageous physiologic position for ideal comfort and function. This treatment takes into account the muscles that control the jaws and the nerves that control the muscles and how this correlates to the entire body. Neuromuscular dentistry works with hard tissues, soft tissues, muscles and nerves.

The following are some symptoms that may indicate neuromuscular problems:

  • recurring headaches
  • pain in the back, neck and shoulder
  • clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • clicking and popping or pain the jaw joints

Identifying the ideal relaxed position

To determine the optimal physiologic position, Dr. Groeber may utilize an electrical device or TENS. The device is placed on the head and neck for about 45 minutes; after which the muscles will be relaxed and the jaw positioned in the optimal relaxed position. The data is used to manufacture an orthotic that will enable the jaw to close in that position. An orthotic is a small, translucent device that sets over the teeth to even the bite. Dr. Groeber will examine the orthotic for three to six months. After this the patient is given the choice of wearing the device indefinitely, or undergoing orthodontic treatment to position the teeth to this ideal position. Another option is to restore one or both teeth arches to align the bite in the ideal position.
